Some of us are “New Year resolution” people and some of us aren’t. If you’re reading this article then you are one of them. I certainly am.
I like the idea of a new chapter, a new chance to get better at the things we love. I personally take advantage of any moment that feels that way. Wether it’s a new day, new week or new year. There is always a reason to learn more and get better.
However, with the new year being 2 months ago, I am sure a lot of people already dropped their new year resolutions, stopped trying so hard and will make themselves the same old promises they did every December 31st : Work Out and Eat Healthy.
Let’s face it, it’s the most popular promise among all generations wether it’s your mom, your neighbour, your BFF or your boyfriend!
I will be sharing with you the tips and tricks that will help you stick to your Work Outs even when the excitement of the new year wears off. Why ? Because I have been working out for 9 weeks (Day 1 was January 2nd) and I have no plans of dropping it.

1 – Have a Different Goal than “Losing/Gaining Weight”:
JUST losing weight or gaining muscle is not a goal in itself. It is a consequence to the goal that you should be having. Personally, I’ve always had this kind of “Goal Weight” or “Ab Definition” type of target. But I suggest you have a different one like running for 10 minutes straight or go on a hike without feeling like you will die on the mountain top!
It will give you wo much more pride when you make it, you will want to keep going and target something more difficult than that. Whereas if your goal is to lose weight – let’s say you did lose it all – what are you gonna do then ? Lose some more ? That can’t go on forever or a storm is going to fly you away ! Besides, it makes you focus on numbers and scales when what matters most is strength and endurance. Does it REALLY matter to be Super-Model Skinny but not be able to run fast enough when a creepy guy is following you ? Exactly.
My personal goal is to be able to surf for 2 hours straight. I have gone to a surf retreat last summer and I definitely realized that I had very weak arms that could barely hold the surf board and very low endurance that I could barely surf for 1 hour without choking on a wave. Once I reach that, I will have another, harder, goal and no numbers on a scale could define it.
2 – Think Outside the Box :
When it’s my turn to babysit my nieces and I think of it as a workout, I definitely enjoy following them up and down the stairs in my house. Until I’m done and then I call my sister to come pick them up!
We all need to redefine what a workout means. In the fitness industry today, we think working out is putting on some workout clothes and hitting the gym. Oh honey, no!
Let’s say you’re a mom reading this. Following your kids around can be a workout. Taking them to the park and playing with them is a workout. Walking them to school is also a workout. When it’s my turn to babysit my nieces and I think of it as a workout, I definitely enjoy following them up and down the stairs in my house. Until I’m done and then I call my sister to come pick them up (jokes)!
I love surfing so much and that makes being active so wonderful because it’s not just about working out, it’s about having fun first and it just happens to be a good workout. I also love tennis & basket ball (which I don’t practice but would love to), and if you do too, go out there and play with your friends or siblings. Basically, dead lifts are not the only way you can call it a work out. Branch out and have fun !
3 – Educate Yourself about Your Current Lifestyle :
If you don’t like your current lifestyle, I suggest you educate yourself about the health issues you might face if you don’t change it today. I am not asking you to become a hypochondriac and think you’re going to die soon. But think about what would happen if you continue to eat the way you eat, or you continue to move the way you move ? In 10 years, all of this will matter way more than it will tomorrow. Eating out everyday is not helping you or your finances so you will definitely want to have saved more money when you plan to buy a house. Having more fat than muscle does not put you out of the equation when it comes to diseases that you will have to face if you don’t change something today.
Education serves way more than just wanting to look like Miranda Kerr in a bathing suit.
Once you educate yourself about the price to pay if you don’t start being active now, those facts will stick to your head and you will become more convinced about the reason to start moving. Education serves way more than just wanting to look like Miranda Kerr in a bathing suit.
4 – Eat Natural Whole Foods :
This one is a big one for me. Sometimes it’s the one I start with and it motivates me to work out and sometimes it’s the other way around. We are natural beings and as much as I know I’m never going to give up junk food forever because sometimes you gotta feed the soul, I believe we have to give our bodies what it can recognize : natural ingredients. This way, the body doesn’t fight so hard to digest or figure out what to do with the chemicals and the processed ingredients. Everything works smoothly when you know how your internal body feels about it.
